The NDIS is a program that allows people who are blind or have a disability to have access to health care services and support. The NDIS has built-in transport options, so you can receive the care you need and get around to go wherever you need to go. The NDIS has a range of transport options, including a daily allowance, tax-free travel, and a private hire service. The NDIS also has a network of partners, who can provide transport options on a location-specific basis, such as taxi services or private hire for shopping trips. The NDIS can also arrange travel for people who are unable to use public transport due to disability.
Once you’ve joined the NDIS and you’ve chosen a transport provider, the service can bill you for the cost of the transport. You can then claim this funding back from your NDIS provider. If you’re having trouble getting your provider to reimburse you, contact the NDIA’s transport provider support team. The NDIA’s transport provider support team is available to help with billing and reimbursement issues. We’ll also connect you with someone in the NDIA who can help you with your transport planning. The NDIA can provide advice on the best way to plan your trips, and help you get the most out of your daily allowance.

People with a disability can request assistance from transport providers. Transport providers (such as taxis, private hire cars, public transport providers, and licensed operators) must comply with the Passenger Transport Act 2003 and the Transport Services (Ability Differences) Act 2006 and have a reasonable approach to people with a disability. The reasonable approach is to provide the same level of service to people with a disability as would be provided to people without a disability. The transport provider cannot ask a person to do something that would be reasonable for a person without a disability to do. For example, a taxi driver cannot refuse to take you to your destination because you have a disability. The taxi driver cannot ask you to “show me where you want to go,” or ask you to “provide an address”. If you do not want to give your address or you do not know your address, the taxi driver cannot ask you to “tell me your address.”
Travel providers who are members of the National Disability Incorporated Association can apply for approval to be the provider of transport for people with disability. The approval will have to be renewed every two years. You can check if a travel provider is approved as the provider of transport for people with disability by calling 1300 361 577 or visiting www.ndia.gov.au.
